Yokomo and Reedy win at BRCA 12th Nationals Rd5

Yokomo and Reedy win at BRCA 12th Nationals Rd5

A fantastic event inside Milton Keynes Shopping Centre saw some great racing and excellent promotion for the sport, along with a debut win for the Yokomo of Matthew Varah.

The fifth round of the BRCA national series was an ambitious undertaking, set in the exhibition area right in front of John Lewis department store at ‘The Centre’ in Milton Keynes.  With extra displays and the BRCA ‘Arrive & Drive’ cars getting the public involved it was deemed a great success to showcase the sport to the general public.  The crowds surrounded the track and with the RC Racing TV crew on hand for live streaming complete with professional commentary from John Hindaugh and Nick Daman, it kept them entertained all weekend long.

On Saturday in the 13.5t class Leigh Dibble took the pole position, just ahead of the Team Associated car of Keith Robertson.  These two were a little clear of the rest of the pack and with times so close, some changes were made for the final with Leigh getting it right, going on to take his second win in a row in this class.  Keith finished a comfortable second with Andy Sawyer in third.

With one meeting still to go, this should be enough for Keith to have clinched the inaugural 13.5t championship.

In the 10.5t Stock class it was multiple World Champ David Spashett on pole position ahead of the Yokomo of Matthew Varah, Reedy powered title rival Olly Jefferies in third.  In the final David and Olly spent so much time racing each other it let Matthew get into the lead and even pull out a fair distance to take his maiden national win with his Yokomo R12C3.  Well done Matthew!!

This leaves David and Olly in a winner takes all situation going into the final round of the championship.

With practice being held late Saturday evening to allow extra time for packing up the next day, it was straight into qualifying on Sunday morning.

In the 10.5t limited Sportsman class it was Keith on pole this time with his 12R5.2 as he tuned himself in to his new Viper VTX1 speed controller.  Only three tenths of a second behind Keith was Mark Jewitt with another Associated and with Jim Spencer third it had all the makings of a cracking final.  The crowd weren’t to be disappointed as these three battled it out for the whole eight minutes, never more then a second apart.  At the buzzer it was Jim that took the win from Keith in second and Mark in third.  All three drivers were using Reedy motors.

Just like in the stock championship, this sets up Jim and Keith into another winner takes scenario for the final meeting.

The Open class was once again all about Olly Jefferies and his Reedy powered car., taking a simple pole position ahead of the Yokomo of Mark Stiles (also using Reedy power) and Adam Walker-Catchpole.  The final was just as easy as qualifying as, despite an initially nervous car; Olly romped away to the win.  It was a ding-dong battle for second place with Mark keeping his cool to beat Chris Kerswell to the line.

So Olly continues to rack up perfect scores in the open class and has the title already in his hands.
