MK Racing GP

MK Racing GP

The 2nd Annual MK Racing GP took place over the weekend, with most of the top UK 1/10th off road drivers in attendance.

The Newbury club running the event had built a spectacular indoor track based on a 5-a-side football pitch. The track incorporated big jumps, crossovers, doubles, carpet and slippy flooring to produce a very challenging track for the drivers.

The track was a mix of surfaces which made for a more challenging race. As per usual the 2wd event took place on Saturday although, unusually FTD qualifying was in operation rather than the usual round by round system. As it turned out, on Saturday the FTD qualifying was probably a mistake as for some reason unknown the track became really slippery on the polished sections after round 1 and the drivers had little chance to beat the times set in the first round. In round 1 it was Lee Martin with his Novak powered RC10B4 FT that sneaked the fastest time in front of Neil Cragg similar machine. After the initial round the overall top ten changed very little as drivers struggled to improve on the slippery track. The finals began with Lee on pole and eight other RC10B4 cars also in the main, and it was Lee Martin who took the first two legs to wrap up the 2wd title in quick time. After three hard fought races it was Darren Bloomfiled who finished up 2nd in front of the Novak Powered RC10B4 FT of Paul Bradby. Lee was victorious in the 2WD class. For the 4wd event the club had been hard at work overnight to produce some new features for the track and we now had a double rhythm section that was also the flyover for the crossover. After a drivers vote it was decided that FTD qualifying would be used again and to be fair in this instance it proved a good choice. After the qualifying rounds it was Lee Martin who once again posted the fastest time, this time in Round 4, and what a run it was! The Novak Powered RC10B44 danced round the track for the 5 minutes and Lee beat the rest of the field by a sensational 6 seconds. It was once again Neil Cragg who lined up second with his Yokomo BMAX-4 with Paul Bradby's Associated/Novak car in 3rd. The first leg of the final saw Neil Cragg take the victory from Lee Martin and Paul Bradby in a fantastic race. Neil taking victory by less than 3/10ths of a second with Paul only 4/10ths behind Lee. The second leg saw Lee Martin take the lead and looking comfortable only for an unfortunate breakage to put him out, this allowed Neil Cragg to take it up and have a huge lead over Tony Truman and Tom Yardy battling for the 2nd. With 1 lap to go however Neil was unsighted by a marshal and fell off the side of a jump which put him right in front of Tony. As it was Neil took it in his stride to cross the line and take the victory. The 3rd leg was taken by Darren Bloomfield from Neil and Tom Yardy. This left the overall positions as Neil from Tony Truman and Tom Yardy making it a Yokomo 1st and 3rd. Neil keeps winning with his Yokomo BMAX-4. This was a really enjoyable race with a good atmosphere and a fun track. I should think most of the drivers will be back next year for another go...
